All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother

This ribbon heart pendant is inscribed with a quotation attributed to Abraham Lincoln. The asymmetrical heart form is composed of interlocking ribbons of silver twisting in space as if by chance, evoking movement and grace. Created by the New-York Historical Society, the sterling silver pendant comes in a gift box with historical information on Abraham Lincoln.

The sixteenth President of the United States may stand as a metaphor for the divided nation he worked to heal. Towering figuratively and literally over American history, Abraham Lincoln is surrounded by myth as much as by facts.

"All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother" was recorded by Lincoln's law partner William Herndon, from remarks reportedly heard in person, in George Alfred Townsend's 1867 book, The Real Abraham Lincoln, and quoted in Josiah G. Holland's 1866 book, The Life of Abraham Lincoln, a copy of which resides in the New-York Historical Society Library. There is some dispute about whether Lincoln was referring to his biological mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln (1784-1818), who died when he was nine, or his stepmother, Sarah Bush Lincoln (1788-1869).
