Timeline of Voting Rights in the United States

1776 - White male landowners 21 and older can vote

1868 - 14th Amendment - full citizenship & voting rights to all men born or naturalized in the US

1870 - 15th Amendment - eliminates racial barriersfor men, but individual voter discrimination persiststhrough the use of poll taxes, literacy tests and other means.

1920 - 19th Amendment - women granted the right to vote nationwide

1924 - Indian Citizenship Act grants Native Americans citizenship and voting rights

1964 - Civil Rights Act - all men and women 21 and older regardless of race, religion,or education have the right to vote

1971 - 26th Amendment - lowers the voting age to 18
