Description
Explore the African American freedom in New York with this informative poster/history lesson.

Freedom was more than "owning oneself." It also entailed black possession of places - buildings, city blocks, streetscapes - in the metropolis. The proprietor's name on a shop, the society's name above a doorway, and a favored street corner transformed New York's landscape into a map of black freedom.

Solidly ethnic neighborhoods did not yet exist. More prosperous black families clustered in the area between Broadway and Chapel Street (now West Broadway) south of Canal, near many black-owned businesses and churches. The Lower East Side, especially near the river, housed many poorer workers and the dance halls they frequented.
