Before the Jeep there was the "Tin Lizzie."  The Ford Model T was the first automobile mass produced on moving assembly lines with completely interchangeable parts, marketed to the middle class. This car, featuring 2 forward gears, a 20 horsepower engine and no driver doors, was the vehicle of choice for Americans Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas working as volunteers during the First World War, driving supplies in "Auntie" to regional French hospitals (work for which they were decorated by the French government).

Honoring the centennial of America’s involvement in World War I, the New-York Historical Society exhibition World War I Beyond the Trenches explores how artists across generations, aesthetic sensibilities, and the political spectrum used their work to depict, memorialize, promote, or oppose the divisive conflict.
