Calligraphic Horse Pouch

$ 10.17 $ 16.95

The frisky equine gracing the museum’s charming mug is an adaptation of Calligraphic Horse, ca. 1850, the work of a young art student, James T. Sutes under the tutelage of his teacher, J G Trego.  The word calligraphy derives from a Greek word meaning “beautiful writing.” During the nineteenth century school children executed penmanship exercises as part of their education. A calligraphic achievement such as this might have originated from such exercises with the inspiration of prints found in magazines, illustrated Bibles, and popular novels.  Both students and their instructors often produced works of exceptional quality.
