One of the defining works of the Hudson River School of painting, Thomas Cole’s epic five-painting series The Course of Empire depicts the growth of a fictional civilization, from birth to power to ultimate demise.  The guiding theme of Cole’s greatest work was the cyclical pattern of history. Cole elaborated his theme through the orchestration of established landscape aesthetics, and unified elements by the device of showing the same landscape through successive eras.  This magnificent series is beautifully reproduced for our notecards. Included are 3 each of 5 images:

The Savage State, ca. 1834

The Arcadian State, ca. 1834
Consummation of Empire, ca. 1835-36
Destruction, 1836
Desolation, 1836
