Our framed canvas print, Portrait of a Woman, ca. 1830-33, is a striking portrait of an unknown woman whose jewelry suggests that she comes from a prosperous background. This work is attributed to Dr. Samuel Addison Shute, (1803-1836) and/or Ruth Whittier Shute (1803-1882), an unusually talented, prolific and enterprising pair of self-taught artists.
The museum’s reproduction is printed on canvas and framed in yellow poplar with black finish and gold painted trim. The canvas print is 6 x 6 inches, and the frame measures 8 x 8 inches. Ready-to-hang with a saw tooth hanger.
The original work is in The Folk Art Collection of Elie and Viola Nadelman at the New-York Historical Society.
