Celebrate and support contemporary artists of color with this Talkin' All That Jazz  1,000-piece puzzle featuring a reproduction of Tim Okamura’s vividly realistic, mixed-media portrait of his painting assistant and fellow painter Natalie Chin. Printed on 100% recycled boards with non-toxic ink, the puzzle is from Brooklyn-based Apostrophe Puzzles, a black-owned/woman-owned company who collaborate exclusively with contemporary artists of color to design 1,000-piece jigsaws featuring their works. A short artist bio and statement is printed on each box. Measures 24 x 24 inches when assembled.

The painting's title, Talkin' All That Jazz is from a 1988 Stetsasonic rap. Tim Okamura brought jazz records to his studio to play for his hip-hop-loving right hand as they worked, and she developed a passion for it. A collage of vintage jazz posters from his collection forms the backdrop of the powerful painting of his charismatic model.

Okamura, whose 2021 oil Nurse Tracey is in the permanent collection of New-York Historical, is a Brooklyn-based painter whose work investigates identity, environment, metaphor, and cultural iconography through a unique blend of realism and mixed media. His juxtaposition of street art and classic academic styles creates a distinct visual language that balances the traditional story-telling of portraiture with modern contemporary motifs.

Apostrophe Puzzles believe in the importance and necessity of diverse representation in both the puzzle and art world and hope that their collections help change the face of art consumerism. 12% of every purchase directly supports the artist, and a portion is also donated to the company’s nonprofit partner, ProjectArt, a tuition-free program offering art classes and residencies in partnership with public libraries.
