Description

On July 12, 1834, after three days of rioting that targeted the city's abolitionists and black residents, Mayor Cornelius Lawrence mobilized the National Guard to restore order. All day long on that Saturday, messages kept arriving at City Hall, most of them from people asking for protection from the rioters. The mayor's office compiled a list of the attacks that might have taken place that day, if the riot had continued.
