Calling all recruits.  The employment of posters such as these reproduced on our magnet set was an early and artistic mode of mass advertising. These posters were the work of the Committee on Public Information, a newly created independent  U.S. Government agency.  In just over 26 months, from April 14, 1917, to June 30, 1919, it used every medium available to create enthusiasm for the war effort and enlist public support against foreign and perceived domestic attempts to undercut America's war aims.

Honoring the centennial of America’s involvement in World War I, the New-York Historical Society exhibition World War I Beyond the Trenches explores how artists across generations, aesthetic sensibilities, and the political spectrum used their work to depict, memorialize, promote, or oppose the divisive conflict.
