Deseta Design is a modern lifestyle brand inspired by traditional Ethiopian art and culture, specializing in giftable items for kids and adults. Founder and Owner, Maro Haile, is an Ethiopian born artist who creates original illustrations used on all of the products. Haile was raised in the US and is a long-time resident of Brooklyn with over 15 yrs experience working in home fashion design for big box stores. Throughout this career, Haile enjoyed thriving in a creative profession, but felt restricted artistically by only catering to the mass market. Over time, she realized she wanted to create a brand featuring designs inspired by her rich cultural background.
Ethiopian heritage provides endless inspiration for Haile though it’s art, jewelry and textiles. Ethiopia is a country known its centuries-old historic churches and manuscripts, which house a treasure trove of biblical paintings. These paintings are typified by character depictions that have simplistic, hand drawn faces with large, almond-shaped eyes, in brightly patterned clothing. Ethiopia is also known for its Coptic crosses, which are hand-crafted with intricate pattern-work designs. These designs are also found in the traditional architecture of the country. And in the woven textiles, you see a wide range of colorful, geometric patterns.
While Deseta Design is directly inspired by Ethiopian art, the pieces are fun, whimsical and relatable, giving them broad, universal appeal. “Deseta” means happiness in Amharic, the national language of Ethiopia, and it is the brand’s mission to spread joy as it celebrates this heritage through every piece it creates.
