With roots in Guatemala and upstate New York, Mayan Hands brings you artfully crafted goods made by talented Maya women artisans. Our product collection blends heritage techniques, like backstrap weaving, and innovations like pine needle basketry and needle felting introduced via artisan trainings. Our design process is a creative collaboration between our artisan partners and our team in New York, capturing the vibrant colors and exceptional craftsmanship that are a hallmark of Guatemalan design.
Founded in 1989 by Brenda Rosenbaum, a Guatemalan anthropologist, we are a women-led 501c3 non-profit and a proud fair trade organization. Today, Mayan Hands works with 18 groups of Maya women artisans located in rural communities in five departments in Guatemala, who represent four different Mayan language groups. We envision a world in which skilled women artisans are celebrated for their talents, receive sustainable, fair pay for their work, and have the financial stability needed to develop their potential and make decisions for their future.
