The delightful designs on these miniature fraktur plates are created using the Sgraffito technique and cogged edges. Handcrafted in traditional redware, the everyday ceramic of 18th-century households, these handmade plates draw deep inspiration from early American folk art, leatherwork motifs, woodcarvings, and traditional Pennsylvania German fraktur designs.
Each one-of-a-kind piece is made by River Rat Pottery, an artisan studio in Conestoga, Pennsylvania run by the husband-and-wife team Bob and Sally Hughes. They specialize in creating traditional early American redware pottery and Pennsylvania German folk art.
