Our James (1777-1852) and Sarah Clark Tuttle (1779-1840), 1836, postcard portrays the married couple dressed in their most fashionable finery and surrounded by colorful furnishings. The artist, Joseph H. Davis, (1811-1865) was an itinerant portraitist who painted over 150 likenesses in his distinctly vivid style, and is best known for portraits of married couples such as the Tuttles. Davis’s signature identifies his sitters with ages and dates in decorative calligraphy at the bottom border of the portrait.
