The delightful design on this Leaping Stag Redware plate is created using the Sgraffito technique and cogged edges. The leaping stag is depicted in red, with green floral elements surrounding the perimeter. Handcrafted in traditional redware, the everyday ceramic of 18th-century households, this handmade plate draws deep inspiration from early American folk art, leatherwork motifs, woodcarvings, and traditional Pennsylvania German fraktur designs.
Each one-of-a-kind piece is made by River Rat Pottery, an artisan studio in Conestoga, Pennsylvania run by the husband-and-wife team Bob and Sally Hughes. They specialize in creating traditional early American redware pottery and Pennsylvania German folk art.
