The delightful design on this Liberty Bell redware plate is created using the Sgraffito technique and cogged edges. The Liberty Bell is depicted in green, with "America" written above and the numbers "17" and "76" on either side. Handcrafted in traditional redware, the everyday ceramic of 18th-century households, this handmade plate draws deep inspiration from early American folk art, leatherwork motifs, woodcarvings, and traditional Pennsylvania German fraktur designs.
Each one-of-a-kind piece is made by River Rat Pottery, an artisan studio in Conestoga, Pennsylvania run by the husband-and-wife team Bob and Sally Hughes. They specialize in creating traditional early American redware pottery and Pennsylvania German folk art.
