Wear the change you want to see in our exclusive Votes for Women t-shirt. The design gives vivid life to the time just a century ago when American women took to the streets to secure the right to vote, and is just as relevant today. The shirt design is inspired by a circa 1900 Votes for Women pin-back button in the collection of the New-York Historical Society.
The woman suffrage movement began in 1848 in Seneca Falls, NY. For the next 50 years, woman suffrage supporters worked to educate the public about the validity of female enfranchisement. By 1900, the campaign for woman suffrage became a mass movement. New York women gained suffrage in 1917, and American women won full voting rights in 1920, with the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. However, despite gaining the franchise, African Americans were presented with many obstacles to exercise their vote. It wasn't until the second half of the twentieth century that institutional and social barriers to full voting rights began to dissolve.
